Described by Emperor Babur as "the pearl amongst fortresses in India," Gwalior Fort is a massive 8th-century hilltop fortress stretching 3 km long and rising 100 metres above the city. The fort complex houses palaces, temples, water tanks, and the famous Man Mandir Palace with its stunning blue-tiled facade. A sound and light show narrates the fort's 1,000-year history every evening.

Gwalior Fort

Built by Raja Man Singh Tomar in the 15th century, this palace is the crown jewel of Gwalior Fort. Its exterior is adorned with elaborate tiles of turquoise, green, and yellow in geometric patterns featuring ducks, elephants, tigers, and crocodiles. The underground dungeons were later used as a Mughal prison where Aurangzeb held his brother Murad.

Man Singh Palace (Man Mandir)

Built by Raja Man Singh Tomar for his Gujar queen Mrignayani in the 15th century, this palace now houses one of the finest archaeological museums in Madhya Pradesh. The collection includes rare sculptures, inscriptions, and artifacts dating from the 1st century AD, including a celebrated miniature statue of the Salabhanjika.

Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum

Built in 1874 by Maharaja Jayajirao Scindia in Italian-Tuscan and Corinthian styles, this grand palace still serves as the Scindia family residence. The Scindia Museum in 35 rooms showcases royal artifacts. The Durbar Hall features two massive chandeliers, each weighing 3.5 tonnes — ten elephants were hoisted onto the roof to test if it could bear the weight.

Jai Vilas Palace & Scindia Museum

The tomb of Mian Tansen, one of the nine jewels (Navaratnas) of Emperor Akbar's court and the greatest musician in Indian history. Located in the Hazira area near the tomb of his Sufi master Mohammad Ghaus, the site is a pilgrimage for classical musicians. A tamarind tree here is believed to bestow musical talent on those who chew its leaves. The annual Tansen Music Festival is held here every December.

An exquisite example of early Mughal architecture, this tomb was built in the 16th century for Mohammad Ghaus, a revered Sufi saint who was the spiritual guru of Tansen. The tomb features intricate jali (lattice) screens, hexagonal towers, and a large central dome. The elaborate stone latticework is considered some of the finest in India.

Built in the 11th century by King Mahipala of the Kachchhapaghata dynasty, these twin temples within the Gwalior Fort complex are dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The name "Saas-Bahu" (mother-in-law and daughter-in-law) is a colloquial corruption of "Sahastrabahu" (thousand-armed Vishnu). The larger temple features remarkably detailed stone carvings and ornate pillars.

Built in 1988 by the Birla family, this temple is modeled after the famous Sun Temple at Konark, Odisha. Made of red sandstone, the temple is dedicated to Surya (the Sun God) and features a chariot-shaped structure with ornate carvings. The surrounding gardens make it a peaceful retreat in the city.

Sun Temple

Located 23 km from Gwalior, Tigra Dam is a picturesque reservoir built across the Sank River. Surrounded by the Tigra hills, it offers boating facilities and is a popular weekend picnic destination for locals. The area is also a birdwatching spot, especially during winter months.
